Parade is Coming Soon!
Hi Fae, the parade is coming soon, and I am really looking forward to the parade and to seeing all of your wonderful costumes and meeting you.
If you would like to pick up your parade ribbon from me prior to Saturday morning then please comment here or private message me with your ETA in Atlanta. I will be picking up your ribbons on Thursday and can establish a meet up time for Thurs or Fri if you wish.
Otherwise we will meet on the concrete benches to the right of the main Hyatt entrance between 9:10-9:20 am sat morning and walk to woodruff park. If you are running late simply met us at woodruff park under the banner "The Fae". I will have the extra ribbons with me.
If you are worried or want more details please send me a private message or comment here.
Thanks, and see you soon!

Back in 2011
So parade walkers, or want to be parade walkers. Please tell me you are interested in parading in D*con 2011, the 10th anniversary of the parade, because I know I am. I know that Cruxshadows has stolen the whole faerie idea, but I still planning on being there and being awesome :D

One to carry the torch
Hey Fellow Con-Fae,
I will be unable to make it to Dragon*con this year. As I am usually the one who signs the group up in the parade database, picks up the group's ribbons, and puts out reminders to the communities in general, I knew I needed to let you fae know that I will be unable to do these duties. It would be wonderful if faeries could still be represented in the parade. Each year our group has grown a little bigger that the last, and we have had some kind and considerate members from all over the world. I am happy to help in anyway that I can between now and D*con. Just let me know. I regret I will be unable to see us all together this year in Atlanta. Current Mood: melancholy

I know it is still months away, but it is my next big trip, and I can't wait.
I've started making lists---of little details I need to finish--and things I don't want to forget and making sure everyone has their rooms and dates in order. Everyone goign with me is putting in for the time off now and startign to get serious about going.

Welcome new walkers
Welcome to those who have added this community with the intent to walk with us in the Dragon*con Parade on Saturday morning of this year! We are looking so forward to it. We have a banner that is carried with our group. Other ideas are always welcome. Last year some wands and candy were handed out by the group as well. Anything you are interested in bringing to share with the crowds we'd love to hear about. Any ideas for making the group even better would be welcome. Costume questions feel free to post here as well.
Each year I pick up our parade ribbons and then set a time to hand them out from the Hyatt bar. If you can't make that meet-up I also will have them at the parade staging grounds. You have to have the pink ribbon to walk in the parade. Current Mood: creative

I know many times you have friends/ family that are interested in costuming with us and don't use livejournal. Since facebook has become so popular I have added a group to facebook where I will also post important info as we get close to Dragon*con 2009. Please join the group or have anyone who might be interested join the group!
If you are on here and would also like to friend on facebook, just let me know in the message that you are from here (since I don't usually accept names I don't recognize).
We are registered in the database to walk in the parade for this year and I am looking forward to it.

Artic/ Winter faery
Hi fae. I wanted to share picts of my new faerie costume so far. I am planning on wearing this one (or more) nights while at Dragn*con this year. This won't be my parade costume. I will most likely wear the scale mail that I worked so hard on last year, in the parade. I am pleased with how this costume has come out. It was all inspired by the hat I bought at the NC Ren Fest. I am still trying to come up with a great wing idea for the costume. All the things I have pictured are too heavy or too impractical for making and wearing at con. I am waiting for the prfect inspiration to hit me. This is the most I have ever sewn and hand-sewn on a costume and my first time really working with fur. ( winter wondermentCollapse )
wearing the little wrap will probably depend on how the wings end up and how the whole ensemble looks together. Let me know what you think =D Current Mood: creative

Here is a tutorial that helped some. I wasn't sewing fur to fur, but you will be with your satyr legs. sewing fur
Cutting the back with a razor knife (not scissors) was great advice. Also from another article I got the advice to use a My Little Pony brush or doll brush to pull the fur gently out of the seams without ripping the fur out, so you can't tell it was sewn down underneath, which really worked. The bottom seam on the skirt was sewn on the machine and then I used a wee brush on it and you can't tell, it pulled the top furs right out of the seam. I can mail you a My little Pony brush if needed ;)

So I was in wal-mart the other day (yeah wally world, place of eternal sin an toil etc...) in the craft section when I came upon in the wedding stuff a white bubble machine that works on batteries. I was wondering if you guys would like to use one or two in the parade? We would need a wagon of some kind to carry them. As I am in Seattle and flying in I wouldn't be able to bring a wagon. But my sister and I are willing to buy at one machine if others will chip in for the rest? Bubbles have always seemed magical to me. And it would be more enviromentaly friendly than confetti.

Advice for a first timer...
I'm not sure how much traffic this comm gets during the off-months, but I thought posting here would be a good place to start. D*C 09 will be my first D*C ever (my first non-professional con ever, actually), and my first time making a fairy costume since I was a kid. I do a lot of sewing and crafts, including a lot of costuming, but this is my first time making wings, and my first time wearing a costume to something other than Halloween, SCA, stage plays, and LotR opening night. ;)
I've decided to go with cellophane and vinyl wings. I'm still in the design phase, but I thought I'd reach out to the collective knowledge of this group for some tips on fairy costuming for D*C specifically. I'm going to be flying in (on an airplane, unfortunately ;) ), so I've already started to plan around the idea of fitting the wings into my suitcase. I'm also planning on doing them in two pieces -- one large piece that folds in half along the spine area, and a second smaller piece that I can wear with the large piece, or on its own as mini-wings for more crowded situations, or when I don't feel like putting the larger contraption on.
So what advice can you give a wing and D*C noobie? Any advice at all about planning for the Con, what to do and not do while at the Con, costume construction, anything, would be very greatly appreciated.

Big thank you's
I just want to say thank you, to thedooz. You did a fantastic job of getting us organized and in the right place. So Huzzah to you! As a big girl I was a bit worried about this whole experience but I had a lot of fun and you guys were really kind with making sure we walked as a group. So Huzzah to all my fellow Fairies!
I'm already thinking about next years costumes and taking into account all the lessons learned from this year. 1. light weight fabrics! 2. comfortable shoes! 3. water! If y'all don't mind once I get them sketched I'll post them here.
